Recent English Language Requirement Changes for Australian Visas (Effective 7 August 2025)

The Australian Government has introduced new English language testing rules for visa applicants, effective 7 August 2025. These changes expand the list of accepted tests, update minimum score requirements, and remove the use of ‘at-home’ online test formats.

New Tests Now Accepted

From 7 August 2025, applicants can use a wider range of English language tests when applying for visas. In addition to IELTS, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT, the following are now accepted:
– CELPIP General
– LanguageCert Academic
– Michigan English Test (MET), including Single Section Retake (SSR)
– Cambridge C1 Advanced (with some restrictions depending on visa subclass)

Higher Score Thresholds

Minimum scores have been revised across all proficiency levels — Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient, and Superior English. Applicants must carefully check the new requirements for their chosen visa subclass, as some now require higher band scores across listening, reading, writing, and speaking components.

Validity & Transition Rules

– Existing test results taken before 7 August 2025 may still be accepted under the old score system, provided they are within the test validity period (usually 3 years).
– From 7 August 2025 onwards, only the updated scores will apply.

Secure Test Centres Only

Tests completed under ‘at-home’ or online-only formats are no longer accepted. All results must come from a secure test centre to be valid for visa applications.

What This Means for Applicants

– If you’re planning to apply for a visa, ensure you book one of the approved tests at a secure test centre.
– Double-check the new minimum scores for your visa category, especially for skilled and employer-sponsored visas.
– If you already hold a valid test result from before August 2025, it may still be used — but always confirm against the latest Department of Home Affairs requirements.
